On the great map of the Duchy of Milan painted in 1581 for the Gallery of Maps in the Vatican, in the place of Travedona there appears a name that resembles it not at all: Auoia. Whoever drew that map was working from second-hand information, and names that nobody used on the spot ended up fixed for ever on a Vatican wall. The real name, according to scholars, comes from Latin and means «among the fir woods»; Monate instead comes either from a Roman personal name or from lamone, an augmentative of lama, marsh, because of the lake.
Four thousand and twenty-two inhabitants in the province of Varese, looking out over the lake of Monate. The hamlet was annexed in 1927, taking up again a similar measure of 1809 which at the time had also involved Cazzago. The church of the Madonna della Neve, at Monate, was built between 1350 and 1396, and its patron is celebrated on the fifth of August with three days of festivities that close with fireworks over the lake; on the Sunday afternoon the greasy pole is set up over the water. The peaches of Monate preserved in syrup are registered as a municipal denomination.
