On 7 July 1911 Gian Carlo Menotti was born here, composer and librettist, author of the Christmas opera Amahl and the Night Visitors and founder, in 1958, of the Festival dei Due Mondi at Spoleto. With The Consul he won the Pulitzer prize, which however could only be awarded to United States citizens: they asked him to change his nationality, he refused, and in the end a way round was found — he became an American for a single day, just long enough to collect the prize. In 1998 the comune invited him back to see his native village, and welcomed him in triumph.

The comune, meanwhile, had taken itself apart and put itself together three times in thirty-five years: in 1893 the hamlet of Campagna was detached from Viconago and given to Cremenaga; in 1908 Cadegliano, Gaggio, Argentera and Doneda broke away from Viconago and formed a comune of their own; in 1928 Arbizzo, Cadegliano and Viconago were all three suppressed and reunited as Cadegliano-Viconago. The finest houses, in the meantime, were built by those who came back: in the nineteenth century people emigrated from here to northern Europe and the Americas, and at Gaggio the colonial-style villa was built by the Menotti family, returned after years overseas.
