Saint Abundius and the Orrido di Cunardo gorge
📅 Every year, on 31 August, locally the last Sunday of August
Cunardo celebrates Saint Abundius on 31 August, a feast locally observed on the last Sunday of the month.
Cunardo lies in the middle of four valleys — Valganna, Valmarchirolo, Valcuvia and Valtravaglia — and it goes its own way in church too. The parish of Sant'Abbondio belongs to the diocese of Como, while almost all the neighbouring villages are in the archdiocese of Milan: here, therefore, mass is celebrated in the Roman rite and not the Ambrosian, and the liturgical border runs around a single municipality. The parish was born in the fifteenth century at the wish of bishop Branda Castiglioni.
Beneath the village, on the other hand, there is a void: the Orrido di Cunardo is a branching cave through which the river Margorabbia flows, and its chambers have names out of a novel, the Cavern of the Dead, the Unknown Lake, the Grotto of the Little Madonna. The name of the municipality is said to come from the Lombard Kunihard, fortified village, and above the houses stands Monte Castelvecchio, which tradition links to a Lombard stronghold. Cunardo has worked ceramics since ancient times. In 1751 the inhabitants were four hundred and forty-three; from 1812 to 1816 the municipality was suppressed and joined to Marchirolo. Two thousand eight hundred and eighty-seven inhabitants in the province of Varese.
