Saint Julius, patron of Cugliate-Fabiasco
📅 Every year, on 31 January
Cugliate-Fabiasco celebrates Saint Julius on 31 January, in the church dedicated to him.
This municipality is what was left of another one. In 1928 Cugliate and Fabiasco were suppressed together with Marchirolo and merged into a new body called Val Marchirolo; in 1955 Marchirolo was re-established and took its name back, while what remained of the merger renamed itself Cugliate-Fabiasco, with the town hall at Cugliate. The name of the village, for that matter, had already changed many times before: Quiliate, Coliate, Quigliate, Quià, Culiate, Culliate, down to today's form, all italianisations of the dialect Cuja.
In the cemetery beside the church of San Giulio, on the eighth of March 1944, Pietro Pagliolico was shot, who had been commander of the Ajas partisan group in the Valle d'Aosta, decimated by a roundup in December 1943. He was trying to reach the formations of the Luino area on orders from the National Liberation Committee of Casale Monferrato; he was seized in his hiding place at Cugliate the day before. On Monte La Nave and at the Alpe Manera traces of the Cadorna Line remain. Three thousand and seventy-four inhabitants in the province of Varese.
