Cislago

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 9,984 · Postal code: 21040

The name Cislago is thought to go back to cista, a basket, from the hollow the village sits in: Cistello, Cistellago, Cislago. On the map of the Duchy of Milan painted in the Gallery of Maps of the Vatican Palaces it appears instead as Siflago. With Gerenzano and Saronno the comune forms a peninsula of the province of Varese wedged between those of Como and Milan.

At the centre stands the castle, perhaps grown on a watchtower or a Roman castrum, pulled down in 1510 by the troops of Matteo Schiner and passed in 1620 to the marquis Cesare II Visconti, who rebuilt it as a baroque villa; since the eighteenth century it has belonged to the Castelbarco, a Trentino family still living in part of it. The arms show that castle, red with Ghibelline merlons on blue, under a gold mitre. The Bozzente, which once ran past it and split the village in two, was diverted away because of its floods.
