Mozzate first appears as Mozao in a parchment of 712, by which Liutprando, king of the Lombards, granted properties to the Pavia monastery of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro. Two readings survive: the Celtic mota, high ground, or the personal name Mozzo, common in the Middle Ages. On the map of the Duchy of Milan in the Vatican Palaces the place is marked Moza, San Martino beside it as a separate hamlet.
The arms hold three figures: the wavy band for the Bozzente, on whose right bank the village sits; the castle the town had; the three bees for the industry grown from its people's work. Of the medieval tower, said to have stood where Villa Cornaggia Medici now is, the end is what is known: in the thirteenth century three hundred crossbowmen of the Della Torre militia pulled it down. In 1928 Mozzate ceased to be a comune, taken into a new one named after the Seprio, and won its autonomy back only in 1953; the title of city came in the year two thousand.
