The amaretto made Saronno famous on every continent: the crisp biscuit of its historic confectioners and the amber liqueur bearing its name are this city's ambassadors between Milan and the lakes. But the masterpiece is in the sanctuary of the Beata Vergine dei Miracoli: in the dome, Gaudenzio Ferrari's "Concert of Angels" — dozens of musicians in flight — is among the most joyous pages of the Lombard Renaissance.

A historic junction of the Nord railways, Saronno lives on trade and trains: half an hour to Milan's Duomo, or Como, or Malpensa. A crossroads with far more art than it admits.
