Saints Philip and James, patrons on Lake Maggiore
📅 Every year, on 3 May
Laveno-Mombello celebrates its patrons, Saint Philip and Saint James, on 3 May.
Laveno-Mombello lies in a bay of Lake Maggiore facing Verbania-Intra, and took its present shape in 1927, when Laveno, Mombello and Cerro merged. The coat of arms keeps both main villages: above, the black eagle of Laveno standing on a capital and holding a bundle of thunderbolts; below, the crowned golden eagle of Mombello. The name has two explanations, the Latin labes, landslide, and the Roman general Titus Labienus, whose trace survives in the via Labiena; Mombello would be the mons belli, the hill of the battle.
Austrian forts stand at either end of the gulf: there, in 1859, Garibaldi's Alpine Hunters were driven back, and an ossuary beside the tower recalls the fighting. In 1856 three former workers of the Richard factory in Milan set up, in a disused glassworks at San Michele, the pottery that became the Società Ceramica Italiana, among the largest in Europe. The main plants have closed, but their output is on show in the ceramic design museum in Palazzo Perabò at Cerro.
