On Lake Maggiore's Borromean gulf, Verbania is Piedmont's garden: the botanical gardens of Villa Taranto, created by Scottish captain Neil McEacharn from 1931, line up twenty thousand species from around the world and explode with tulips in spring. Opposite lie the Borromean Islands — Bella, Madre, Pescatori — the lake-boat excursion by definition.

The capital joins Intra, industrious and market-driven, with Pallanza, elegant along its promenade. Behind rises the Val Grande, the largest wilderness area in the Alps: lake and absolute silence, half an hour apart.
