Lonate Pozzolo

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 11,748 · Postal code: 21015

Lonate Pozzolo lies between heathland and the Ticino, at the south-west tip of the province of Varese. The name first appears in 973, in a land swap between Aupaldo, bishop of Novara, and one Celsone of Lonate, son of Leone; by the early thirteenth century the village had its own consuls, statutes and notaries. Its arms carry a red well-curb over three silver crescents on red.

The parish church of Sant'Ambrogio was rebuilt on an octagonal plan by a local man, Antonio Bodio, known as Antonio da Lonate, a pupil of Bramante whose best-known work is Vigevano cathedral. In 1636, near the hamlet of Tornavento, the Spanish who held the Milanese and the French-Piedmontese fought a battle that drove out the richest families and left the village to farming for two centuries. Between the wars the airfield Gabriele D'Annunzio named Campo della Promessa worked here; Malpensa descends from that flying tradition.
