Saint Michael the Archangel, patron of the land of the Oratory of Santo Stefano
📅 Every year, on the last Monday of September
Magnago celebrates Saint Michael the Archangel on the last Monday of September, in the church dedicated to him.
Magnago lies in the Alto Milanese, northwest of Milan. Its name is first written down as «el locho da Magnago», in the statutes on the waters and roads of the Milanese countryside drawn up in 1346, among the villages of the pieve of Dairago bound to keep up the road to San Pietro all'Olmo. The later trade is in the coat of arms: a cogwheel for industry and a cotton branch for the textile work that was long the local business.
In the mid-eighteenth century the answers to the tax survey describe a very small self-government: an assembly of householders, the convocato, called into the square by the console, and a council of one console and two sindaci. Each year the outgoing officers put twelve names to the feudal lord, who kept six and drew one of them by lot, before the whole village, as the new console. In 1869 Magnago absorbed Vanzaghello and Bienate; Vanzaghello became a comune of its own again in 1968, and Bienate is now the only hamlet.
