Mercallo

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,827 · Postal code: 21020

The name of Mercallo probably comes from Old German mark halle, «place of the border»: the village stood between the old pievi of Angera and Brebbia, and the border, ever since, has gone on shifting around it. In the Napoleonic period, in 1809, Mercallo was annexed to Comabbio; and from 1801 to 1927 it was in the province of Como, before passing to that of Varese.

Today it looks out on the western shore of the lake of Comabbio — which is the village that had taken it in. In 1751 it had 297 inhabitants; a century later, in 1853, there were 553. The municipal coat of arms is recent: the council approved it in 1986 and the decree came in 1988.
