In September 1879 Napoleone Borghi, who owned the lake, discovered a prehistoric station in the Brabbia marsh: a rise of ground made of dozens of mounds, over an area of eight thousand square metres. Out of it came three hundred flint bladelets, five hundred potsherds, charcoal, sharpened wood and — above all — a chestnut bow a little over a metre long, with two flint points and an arrow that still had its tip fitted. In the same year, not far away, Giuseppe Quaglia was recovering the contents of several Roman burial grounds, at the place called Longori and in the wood known as dell'Abbate. A dugout canoe was also found in Lake Comabbio, but every trace of it has been lost.

On the height between Lake Comabbio and Lake Monate, at a spot called Crusicula because the roads crossed there, a certain Ansegiso founded in the eleventh century the monastery of the Holy Sepulchre: so a diploma of archbishop Ariberto tells, but it bears no date, so the foundation floats between 1024 and 1032. The gifts of the faithful made it grow quickly, and when they stopped the monastery went on enlarging its lands all the same. The village was later enfeoffed to the Visconti Borromeo. In the coat of arms, granted in 1980, there are a green mount, a silver mitre and two silver wavy bands.
