Saint Martin, patron of the land of the Cromlechs
📅 Every year, on 11 November
Vergiate celebrates Saint Martin on 11 November, in the church dedicated to him.
Vergiate stands on the moraine hills of the Strona, south-east of Lake Comabbio; the map of the Duchy of Milan painted in 1581 in the Vatican Palaces calls it Vergia. Its arms, used freely and never granted by decree, show a bold cockerel on grass against blue: local tradition ties them to the Gallo Venoni family, who gave generously to the church of San Martino and the village school. The present municipality took shape under Napoleon, when Sesona and then Cimbro, Corgeno and Cuirone were annexed.
From the older past remain the little church of San Gallo, earlier than 1000, and the medieval towers of Sesona, of the centre and of Corgeno, now a ruin. Then came aviation: the SIAI-Marchetti works — the initials stood for Società Idrovolanti Alta Italia, its main plant in neighbouring Sesto Calende — built aeroplanes from the dawn of flight, and now assembles helicopters. The artist Enrico Baj moved here in the late fifties and died in the village. In 2026 the President of the Republic granted it the title of city.
