Mornago

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,834 · Postal code: 21020

On the coat of arms of Mornago there is a Moor's head, in profile, bound with a silver band. It has nothing to do with the history of the village: the name comes from the Latin Maurinus, a Roman-era landowner who held wide estates here, but the resemblance to Moro, Morelli and Mornati did the rest, and heraldry took that road. In the documents of the thirteenth century the village was still called Morenago.

Mornago is made of four villages, and it has four parishes: as many as the communities into which the territory was once divided. They were brought together in 1869 — with the addition of Cimbro, which two years later went off to Vergiate. There is a piece of industrial history too: in 1925, in the hamlet of Crugnola, Luigi Angelino founded a motorcycle firm that bore his name, the Angelino Super-Moto.
