Origgio

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 7,416 · Postal code: 21040

Origgio lies at the southern tip of the province of Varese, on the plain; the Bosco del Conte, oak and black locust, grows on the Bozzente's old flood ground and is shared with Uboldo and Cerro Maggiore. The Roman name was Oleoductus, and the via Varesina passed this way, linking Milan to Lugano through Varese. In the records the form keeps shifting — Oleoductum, Uduluctum, Udrugium, Udrigium, Urugio — and as Oragio the village appears on the map of the Duchy of Milan in the Vatican Palaces' Gallery of Maps.

The arms are parted in two: the bearded head of an old Cistercian friar, for the abbots of Sant'Ambrogio who held the village from 835 to 1480, and the three interlaced gold rings of the Borromeo, who came later. At the census of 1751 no document could be found attesting that Origgio had been enfeoffed; instead of a general council it had a consul and two syndics. The Borromeo summer villa passed to Francesco Borletti, husband of Ester Schiaparelli, whose father, the astronomer Giovanni Virginio Schiaparelli, did his comet research from the tower in the park next door, which still bears his name. Carlo Airoldi, born at Cascina Broggio, walked from Milan to Athens in 1896 for the marathon of the first Olympics and was turned away as a professional.
