Rancio Valcuvia

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 935 · Postal code: 21030

Rancio Valcuvia has 935 inhabitants in the Valcuvia, and it was called simply Rancio until 1863. The village is made of two pieces: the old centre a little higher up, and down below the small hamlet of Cantevria, cut off from the rest by the main road that runs along the valley floor and by the torrent beside it. On the fronts of the houses, in both of them, there are votive frescoes, and at the edge of the village an old Romanesque bridge crosses the Rancina torrent.

A village of nine hundred souls nevertheless has its portrait in the Vatican: on the map of the Duchy of Milan painted in 1581 in the Gallery of Maps, Rancio is there, and it is called Ranci. Until 1949 the tram of the Valcuvia ran along the main road; on the same road stood the Torcitura di Rancio, born as a half-and-half company between Montefibre, which wanted its own yarns processed, and the Ratti group, which tried out its textile machinery there before exporting it. The shed, after serving as the set of a horror film in 2022, has ended up with a toolmaking firm.
