The «Primo» in the name is an order number: it was added on 8 February 1863 so as not to confuse the village with Masciago Milanese, which however in 1928 was merged with Bovisio and no longer exists, so the distinction has stayed without anything to be distinguished from. The real name comes from the Celtic maegh, village of pebbles, and the pebbles are still in the streets.
Little is known of the place: Roman origins, then the fief of the Valcuvia. The only line of large history is in a deed of 1176, where one Montenario de Masciago appears as judge or envoy of the emperor Frederick Barbarossa. The church of Sant'Agnese, outside the village, is among the oldest in the Valcuvia and served as mother church to many others; it burned in the nineteenth century and was rebuilt, with frescoes by Luigi Morgari.
