Cuveglio

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,397 · Postal code: 21030

In 1809 it was Vergobbio that annexed Cuveglio, along with Arcumeggia, Duno and Cassano. It lasted three years: in 1812 a decree of Napoleon suppressed Vergobbio itself and joined it to Cuvio, and the Austrians restored it shortly afterwards. In 1928 it was everyone's turn again, Vergobbio, Cavona, Cuveglio in Valle and Duno all swallowed into Cuvio; Duno managed to break away in 1954, and in 1956 the other three were erected into a municipality under the name of Cuveglio. Today Vergobbio is a hamlet completely fused with the main town, of which it forms the western half: the very town it had annexed.

Three thousand three hundred and ninety-seven inhabitants in the province of Varese, chief municipality of the Valcuvia, along the main road that climbs from Varese to the Swiss border at Zenna. The hamlet of Canonica, with the church of San Lorenzo Martire, is a vicarial seat of the diocese of Como and exercises jurisdiction over sixteen neighbouring parishes. Between 1914 and 1949 the Valcuvia tramway ran along that same road, with a station here.
