Cassano Valcuvia

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 665 · Postal code: 21030

The village was called simply Cassano until 1863. Its history, as the registers keep it, is above all a history of being joined to others and then detached again. It had a little under three hundred inhabitants in the middle of the eighteenth century; in 1809 it was annexed to Vergobbio; in 1812 it was detached from Vergobbio and joined, together with Ferrera, Masciago, Bedero and Brinzio, to what the administration called the «comune denominativo» of Rancio — five villages gathered under the name of a sixth; and in 1816 the single comuni were restored. By the middle of the nineteenth century the inhabitants were a little over four hundred and fifty. It is a tiny history, made entirely of decrees, and it is worth reading because it shows with what ease the map of these valleys was drawn and redrawn within a single generation.

Cassano lies along the Valcuvia, a little above the road that climbs the valley from Cittiglio to Luino; between 1914 and 1949 it had a stop on the tramway of the Valcuvia, which ran along that same road. The tenor Aldo Bertocci lived here for some thirty years, until his death. And the village, with its six hundred and fifty inhabitants, has a rugby club: the men's team is called the Huns, and the women's team, declining the name, the Hunnesses.
