Cossignano

Province: Ascoli Piceno · Region: Marche · Population: 1,015 · Postal code: 63067

The old centre of Cossignano would fit inside a football pitch: 180 metres by ninety, oval, closed by its walls on the hilltop between the sources of the Menocchia and the Tesino. The name comes from the Cossinii of Tivoli, who after the Roman conquest brought in the slaves who cleared the hill and made it farmland: the place was the fundus Cossinianus. The town motto, Ferax et ferox, says both things at once, good soil and the trade of arms, and the most powerful man Cossignano ever produced remains Lucius Afranius, consul in 60 BC and governor of Syria.

Its official date of birth is 1303, when Boniface VIII granted the village the Coelestis Paterfamilias: some say for the thousandth anniversary of Saint George's martyrdom, others because that year the village had gathered enough money to build itself a town hall and a bell, and both explanations are probably true. The bell of 1303 is still in the town hall. Shortly before, in 1229, the duke of Spoleto had given Cossignano to Ripatransone with leave to demolish it, and what saved it was the peace between Frederick II and Gregory IX; in 1396, on the contrary, the governor of the March came to live here and for a while the village was the capital of the region.
