Feast of Saint Barnabas
📅 Every year, on 11 June
On 11 June Carassai, a municipality of 1,116 inhabitants in the province of Ascoli Piceno, celebrates its patron Saint Barnabas; in August the tagliatella-with-duck and grilled sausage sagre are held.
The village changed its name a dozen times before it settled. In the documents it is Carlassalis in 1244, Carrasciale in 1290, Carnassale in 1321, Carassale in 1364, Carnasciale still in 1600, when the fair of San Barnaba was held; and earlier still, in the pastoral visits, castrum Guardie. Carassai is read from the middle of the sixteenth century.
In the middle of the fifteenth century the people called Saint James of the Marches twice to make peace over their boundaries: in 1451 with Petritoli, and that quarrel was settled only twenty-one years later, in 1454 with Ripatransone. To leave a sign of the reconciliation the friar proposed building the church of Santa Maria del Buon Gesù, and placed in it a Madonna of painted wood.
