Montalto delle Marche

Province: Ascoli Piceno · Region: Marche · Population: 2,260 · Postal code: 63068

In 1586 Sixtus V, originally from Montalto, made his home town the capital of a state of thirteen comuni and gave it a mint: the picture gallery still keeps the quattrino struck here. Two centuries later, in 1798, the town rose against Napoleon's army, and bishop Castiglioni, the future Pope Pius VIII, was arrested on Napoleon's orders and deported to Mantua.

The prisons of the Presidato are now a museum: the furnishings were remade from an Inventarium of 1604, and the graffiti of the inmates are still on the walls. Through them passed men who had killed with a rake or a scythe, and people locked up merely for debt after a famine or an epidemic. In the town hall the study of Giuseppe Sacconi, architect of the Altare della Patria, has been put back together.
