Feast of Saint Jerome
📅 Every year, on 30 September
On 30 September Ortezzano celebrates Saint Jerome; the village also hosts a permanent museum of modern and contemporary art.
The name comes from a Roman landowner: Hortentius, with the suffix that marked an estate, and the first time it appears in writing is in 840, in a diploma of the emperor Lothair, in the form Ortatiano. That the Romans were here is shown by remains surfacing in three districts: and in one of them, in 1877, a large polychrome mosaic with the four seasons was found. Of that mosaic nothing more is known today: it is lost. Of the medieval village there remain the houses, stretches of wall, the Gothic Porta da Sole and a tower on a pentagonal plan with Ghibelline battlements, recognisable from far off and now the emblem of Ortezzano.
In 1549 the bandit Federico Nobili invaded the state of Fermo, and it was a bishop who stopped him: Simonetta, bishop of Pesaro, faced him and defeated him right here in 1561. In the church of Santa Maria del Soccorso there is a Virgin enthroned with the Child between four saints that critics hold to be the first work of Vincenzo Pagani, painted while the artist was still under the influence of the Crivelli: certain decorative details are already there that recur in all his canvases, almost a signature. The organ, of 1747, was built by a local master, Attili.
