Massignano

Province: Ascoli Piceno · Region: Marche · Population: 1,655 · Postal code: 63061

The village carries the name of a landowner, Massinius, and in 967 the emperor Otto I made a gift of his estate to the abbey of Farfa, far away in the Sabina. A couple of kilometres off stand the ruins of the fortress of Forcella, and in 1208 the papers already name a Tebaldo di Masigniano.

In 1532 the village was besieged by Muzio Colonna, come down to help the men of Ascoli in their war with Fermo; and in 1567 there was talk of detaching Massignano from Fermo and placing it directly under the Holy See, but ten years later Gregory XIII, by a solemn bull, gave it back. In the parish museum there is a Hungarian cope of the fifteen hundreds.
