Feast of San Bartolomeo
📅 Every year, on 24 August
On 24 August Campofilone, a municipality of 1,951 inhabitants in the province of Fermo, celebrates its patron San Bartolomeo.
The village is known for its maccheroncini, an egg pasta so fine that it has a protected name of its own; and it grew around the Benedictine abbey of San Bartolomeo, which stands over a Roman villa and, before that, a pagan temple: the first document naming it is of 1066. Around the monks lived those who served them — smiths, carpenters, masons, farriers, traders.
When at the beginning of the thirteenth century the castle became a free comune, it remained the abbey's as well: the arms say both things, with a lion for the town's authority, the sword for the right to do justice, and three mountains for the Benedictines. One reading of the name is Campus Fullonum, the field of the fullers. Down towards the sea a Roman villa keeps its baths, its mosaics and its lead pipes for hot air.
