Feast of Saint Blaise
📅 Every year, on 3 February
On 3 February Monte Vidon Combatte, a municipality of 459 inhabitants in the province of Fermo, celebrates its patron Saint Blaise, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
The name sounds like a sentence, and in the village that is exactly how they tell it: one Guidone, lord of the castle, found himself under attack and sent for his brother with a message that ran run Corrado, for Guidon is fighting. A feat of arms nobody can date. The serious explanation is less theatrical but no less curious: Combatte is a personal name, like Guidone, and it appears as early as 1184 in a document that calls the place Combacte de Monte Guidone. Two lords, not a verb.
Two important paintings left this village, and the same hand made them, that of Fra Marino Angeli: the Collina Polyptych, now in the diocesan museum of Fermo, and the Madonna of the Roses, his most famous work and the first he ever signed and dated, now in the National Gallery of the Marche at Urbino. What remains are the frescoes of the church of San Procolo, early Christian, partly attributed to the school of the Farfa monk-painters: the church, however, has been unusable since the earthquakes of 2016. Of the walls a fifteenth-century double-arched gate survives.
