Feast of Saints Fabiano and Sebastiano
📅 Every year, on 5 September
On 5 September Montottone, a municipality of 1,011 inhabitants in the province of Fermo, celebrates its patron saints Fabiano and Sebastiano.
In medieval documents the village is Mons Actonis, the mountain of Atto, after the lord who had its defensive walls built, and only in the fifteenth century does the name become Montottone. The first certain appointment in its history is 1191, when Pope Celestine III invested the Benedictine monks with temporal and spiritual dominion over the castle: here religious and civil power lay in the same hands.
Its best moment came between 1536 and 1545, when Montottone was the seat of the ecclesiastical state in Agro Piceno and the castles subject to Fermo gathered here. Meanwhile, and for far longer, clay was being worked: the first traces of ceramic craft fall between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and the trade never left. The village still makes pottery and terracotta, and its ceramics museum is housed inside the middle school, which is where a craft gets handed on.
