Montedinove

Province: Ascoli Piceno · Region: Marche · Population: 505 · Postal code: 63069

In a comune of five hundred people three different dialects are spoken, each holding its own slice of the territory: to the north, along the Aso, they speak Fermano; south of the Tesino, Castignanese; and in between, in the village and the surrounding countryside, Montedinovese, which has features of its own. The hill the village sits on, halfway between the two valleys, explains why. In 578, when the Lombards reached these parts, the people of Ascoli came here to take shelter.

In 1039 one Longino gave the territory to the abbey of Farfa, and it was the monks who built the fortifications. They proved useful: in 1239 the village was besieged by King Enzo and after two years came out victorious, so much so that the main gate, which had been called the sea gate, has been the Gate of Victory ever since. There is also a sanctuary dedicated to Saint Thomas Becket, which in Italy is not a common thing. The banner was granted to the comune in 1951, but the one it actually uses is another.
