Colmurano

Province: Macerata · Region: Marche · Population: 1,278 · Postal code: 62020

Colmurano is the third smallest municipality in the province by area, and it keeps its walls with their bastions and the pointed gate of San Rocco, older than the thirteenth century, which once had a drawbridge. In the church of the Annunziata there is a nativity frescoed in 1560 by Giovanni Andrea De Magistris, and the chapel of the Loggetta, under the town hall portico, is today the council chamber.

In 1886 Lorenzo Contratti was born here, who signed himself Renzo C. Ventura: illustrator and caricaturist, he drew for the magazines of the early twentieth century and was convicted of offence against public decency for the female figures with which he illustrated a scandalous novel of the time. He spent his last years in an asylum and died in 1940. In July the village fills up for Artistrada, the street performers' festival.
