Ripe San Ginesio

Province: Macerata · Region: Marche · Population: 860 · Postal code: 62020

The name says it all: the ripe are the steep slopes the village stands on, and San Ginesio is the town it was subject to. That subjection has a date and a price. In June 1201 the Prontoguerra family, who held Ripe, signed a pact with San Ginesio: they undertook to send a representative there, rotating every two months in peacetime and permanently in war, to defend that territory and to supply it with farm produce. In exchange the consuls of San Ginesio gave thirteen modioli of land, forty loads of wine for two years and a house. Then the village was sold off in pieces: the castle in 1252, the churches soon after, the lands in 1294.

The hostility, however, did not end. In 1337 some nephews of the Prontoguerra tried to get back into government with a revolt, and to keep themselves out of it they put a young man at the head of the rising, Angerillo, who already had a grudge of his own. The rebels gathered in the collegiate church of San Ginesio, killed two wealthy townsmen and made for the government palace. The real organisers got away; the one who paid was another man, Vanne di Arpinello, who during the assault had broken the trumpets the defenders used to raise the alarm. It was the thirtieth of November, and in San Ginesio that day is still called the Battle of the Fornarina.
