Sant'Angelo in Pontano

Province: Macerata · Region: Marche · Population: 1,483 · Postal code: 62020

The name puts together Saint Michael the Archangel, whom the Lombards venerated, and the Gastaldato di Ponte, the district of the Duchy of Spoleto the village belonged to: «in Pontano» served to tell it from the other Sant'Angelos. On the coat of arms, sure enough, the angel stands on a three-arched bridge, a sword in one hand and a balance in the other.

In 1944 the fight here was over wheat: on the fifteenth of February about a hundred partisans blocked the roads into the town and sold off two thousand quintals taken from the Agrarian Consortium at Passo Sant'Angelo. The head of the province answered by fining the comuni six hundred thousand lire. Under the collegiate church of the Santissimo Salvatore there is a crypt as large as the church itself.
