Every summer, inside a neoclassical arena built in 1829 for the game of pallone col bracciale, one of Italy's most striking opera seasons takes the stage: the Sferisterio, designed by Ireneo Aleandri, has a wall ninety metres long, an acoustic that singers bless, and it is the only open-air theatre in the world with boxes. It is not the only stage: the eighteenth-century Teatro Lauro Rossi was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2026, within the serial site of the Italian-style theatres of central Italy.
Macerata was born from a dead city: when the Goths overran Roman Helvia Recina, the survivors climbed the hills and founded two towns, this one and Recanati — the Roman theatre of Helvia Recina is still there, at Villa Potenza. The comune dates itself to 1138, the university to 1290: one of the oldest in the world, and still the heart of a town of brick and arcades. Worth seeing are the Mozzi Borgetti library, Palazzo Buonaccorsi and the hamlet of Villa Ficana, a whole quarter of raw-earth houses turned into an ecomuseum; worth tasting, the vincisgrassi, which here are also called svinci. Macerata celebrates Saint Julian the Hospitaller on 31 August in the cathedral dedicated to him; his origins are intertwined with those of the Roman city of Helvia Recina, whose 2nd-century theatre still testifies to its ancient prosperity.
