The Roman survey still gives the names here. Before that there were Umbrians and Piceni, and traces remain in the place names: Valle Jana and Tennacola recall Janus and Tinia, and in the hamlet of Terro there is an oval cippus, probably a pagan altar, which they call the Pietra di Terro or the Uovo di Sarnano. From the age of Augustus come the centuriation stones: from a boundary marker found at Pianelle, between Sarnano and Amandola, it can be seen that the territory was divided into a centuriated part and an uncenturiated one, that is the mountain, whose pastures and woods stayed at the disposal of the whole community. And the Roman measuring still names the hamlets: Bisio from Visius, Piobbico from Publicum, Servigliani from Servilius, Vesciano from Visianus.

The comune of Sarnano was made by two abbots. On 1 June 1265 cardinal Simone Paltanieri released the men of the Comunanza di Sarnano from subjection to the lords of Brunforte, because Rinaldo di Brunforte had not answered the pope's summons. A year later the policy of the Church changed and the legate Fulcone gave Sarnano back to the Brunforte, but without cancelling the earlier act: both were in force. The quarrel that followed ended only on 19 June 1281, when the two sides agreed to put the matter to two abbots, Giovanni of the abbey of Amandola and Mauro of the abbey of Piobbico. On 23 June 1282 the verdict came: the lords of Brunforte were to recognise the comune of Sarnano, become its castellans, and pull down every castle they owned.
