Feast of Santa Maria in Val d'Abisso
📅 Every year, on 8 September
On 8 September Piobbico, a municipality of 2,109 inhabitants in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, celebrates its patroness Santa Maria in Val d'Abisso.
The name comes from land that nobody wanted. After the Social War the Romans divided and assigned these territories, but the part up against Monte Nerone was left out of the assignments and stayed ager publicus: from publicus, step by step, came Piobbico. The village lies where the Biscubio runs into the Candigliano, between the Nerone and the Montiego.
For almost five centuries the Brancaleoni ruled here, and from their castle came to hold the whole Massa Trabaria; then they lost it all for setting themselves against the pope. Piobbico became a comune of its own only late, in 1827, and took for its arms a bare arm holding up an oak. Today, though, it is famous for something else: the Ugly Club, which holds its gathering here on the first Sunday of September.
