Feast of Saint Andrew the Apostle
📅 Every year, on 30 November
On 30 November Cessapalombo celebrates its patron Saint Andrew the Apostle; the municipal territory preserves the Castello di Montalto.
Above the gorge of the Fiastrone, inside the rock, is the Grotta dei Frati, the friars' cave: the name comes from the Benedictines who settled there around the year one thousand and built their convent inside it. In the hamlet actually called Monastero stands instead the abbey of Santa Maria in Insula, today San Salvatore, with a crypt of three aisles. Not far off are the Lame Rosse, and above the village remain the castle of Montalto and the fortress of Col di Pietra.
On the twenty-second of March 1944, in the hamlet of Montalto, the Nazi-Fascists shot thirty-two young partisans. For those sacrifices and for the partisan struggle the comune received the war cross for military valour; on the spot, however, there is only a modest monument, and the very source that records it calls the episode little known. In the church of San Benedetto there is a fresco by Giovanni Andrea de Magistris, the same painter who signed an altarpiece in the convent of Colfano, a little further north.
