Feast of Saint Fortunatus
📅 Every year, on 14 October
On 14 October Peglio celebrates its patron Saint Fortunatus; with just 735 residents, the territory also preserves several natural caves.
Peglio stands on a great block of gypsum, looking over the upper Metauro valley. It was a Roman pagus, identified with the Pagus Pilleus of the Pentapolis: here, around 739, the Lombards loyal to king Liutprand were defeated by the Roman-Byzantine army. It was then arimannic land, that is of the free Lombards under arms, and became a fortress; it passed to the Holy See when Pepin the Short gave the whole Massa Trabaria to Saint Peter.
In 1291 pope Nicholas IV chose this castle as the safe residence of the Rector of Massa, while outside the Montefeltro, the della Faggiola and the Brancaleoni tore at each other. And it was here, in the castle's inner ward, that on 20 February 1357 cardinal Albornoz received the submission of Urbino. The church of San Fortunato is one of the oldest parish churches of the Urbino diocese: it has two crypts and a Way of the Cross in eighteenth-century terracotta, probably from the pottery workshops of nearby Casteldurante. Under Fascism Peglio was absorbed into Urbania, and became a municipality again after the Liberation.
