Feast of Saint Martin
📅 Every year, on 11 November
On 11 November Apecchio celebrates its patron Saint Martin; the town is also home to the Palazzo Ubaldini, in the historic centre.
At the end of the fifteenth century a small Jewish community lived at Apecchio, some thirty people: in the statutes that count Ottaviano Ubaldini gave the castle in 1492 there are chapters regulating their trades. They stayed more than a hundred and thirty years, until 1631, when the duchy of Urbino passed to the Holy See and the Jews were moved to the ghettos of Pesaro, Senigallia and Ancona.
Their quarter is still there, and round it runs the «giro d'aria»: an alley twenty-eight metres long and less than half a metre wide, among the narrowest in Italy, which bounds the whole block, with the little courtyard where the feast of Tabernacles was kept, the synagogue and the oven. Not far off, in one of the hamlets, there is instead a wooden globe ten metres across, on three floors, that turns like the Earth.
