Gambatesa

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 1,487 · Postal code: 86013

The name ended up on the coat of arms quite literally: there is an outstretched leg on it. Legend says it came from a physical defect of the first owner of the place.

In the castle, in 1550, Donato da Copertino painted for Vincenzo di Capua a cycle of frescoes that covers the rooms: landscapes, grotesques, painted curtains, pergolas, mythological scenes and the cardinal virtues. Restored, the castle is now a picture gallery. The parish church has a baptismal font of 1523 with the arms of the comune and of the Di Capua. Outside the town, the chapel of the Madonna della Vittoria was rebuilt by count Riccardo around 1313. There are 1,487 residents.
