In the eastern villages of this province people still speak an archaic form of Croatian: Acquaviva Collecroce, San Felice and Montemitro keep a minority that crossed the Adriatic centuries ago. Campobasso is the provincial capital, and the 84 municipalities run from the Abruzzo and Campania borders down to the sea, with Puglia to the east and Isernia to the south-west. Even the coat of arms breaks the rules — wheat and an eight-pointed star, no crown, no shield.
Termoli takes most of the visitors, with its old town above the Adriatic and the beach below. At Sepino you walk through Saepinum, the excavated Roman town. Campobasso itself, and Larino and Bojano further inland, show the other Molise, the one that lives away from the coast.

Torella del Sannio celebrates Saint Clement the martyr on 15 October; the town, split between the newer Colle district and the ancient Ciglione, is dominated by the castle developed in the 13th century by the Angevins and later passed to several noble families.

Castelmauro celebrates Saint Leonard the Confessor on 6 November; the town, originally called Castelluccio Acquaborrana, had a 13th-century castle owned by the Canzano family, destroyed by the great earthquake that struck central-southern Italy in 1456.
