The patron saint of Capracotta is Saint Sebastian, celebrated on 20 January. In the parish church of Santa Maria in Cielo Assunta, first mentioned in a document from 1326 as «Sancte Marie de Capracocta», one of the altars is dedicated precisely to him, with bone relics and a statue of him, next to the high altar dedicated to the Assumption. Of the old building a Renaissance bas-relief depicting the Tree of Life still survives on the bell tower.
Capracotta is known across South-Central Italy as the «town of blizzards»: the snow cover can easily exceed a metre, and in March 2015 up to 120 centimetres of snow was recorded falling in a few hours. During the Second World War the town was almost entirely destroyed by fire and dynamite by German troops retreating towards the Val di Sangro, and the church itself had to be rebuilt in 1950 in neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic style.
