Santa Maria del Molise

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 635 · Postal code: 86096

This village changed both its name and its site. Until 1955 it was called Sant'Angelo in Grotte and stood higher up, around a Lombard castle; after the earthquake of 1805 people moved down into the valley, and a decree signed by President Gronchi shifted the seat of the comune there, giving it the name of the lower hamlet.

The old settlement kept the church of San Pietro in Vincoli, with a fresco cycle of around 1350 showing the Seven Works of Mercy, meant to be read from right to left; beside it, set into a cave, runs the spring that legend ties to St Michael, who is said to have shown the Lombards where to build. The 635 residents now live below.
