On 6 August Cantalupo nel Sannio, a municipality of 729 inhabitants in the province of Isernia, celebrates its patron San Salvatore.
The earthquake came on 26 July 1805, which is Saint Anne's day: they carried the saint's statue out of the church of San Salvatore and the shaking stopped. She has been the village's patron ever since.
Those who left took her with them: in Montreal and in Anaconda, Montana, the people of Cantalupo founded the Associazione di Sant'Anna, which is still going. The name is traced either to the Greek kata-lupon, in the middle of the woods, or to the Bulgarian kan-teleped, chief's residence, since there were Bulgars in Samnium as early as the seventh century. The nel Sannio, on the other hand, dates from 1864. There are 729 residents.
