Pesche

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 1,577 · Postal code: 86090

The town clings to the rock, and the name says so: it comes from pesclum, the base of stone. On Monte San Marco the inhabitants built themselves a walled enclosure: a closed wall with three entrances and at least nine towers, and the houses inside, most of them empty today.

The Benedictines left their mark: churches, a hospice, and a way of life so devout that the people of Pesche were called the monastic ones. In 1456 the earthquake destroyed nearly everything and the monks went back to Montecassino. The war memorial, of April 1920, was the first in all Molise. The pine wood on the mountain was planted in the 1950s, to hold the rocks in place. There are 1,577 residents.
