Pettoranello del Molise

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 459 · Postal code: 86090

The village was called Pettorano, and del Molise was tacked on to keep it apart from the Pettorano on the Gizio. In the autumn of 1860, as the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies came apart, the battle that still carries the old name was fought here.

Up at the top, the remains of the castle survive inside the baronial palace known as delle Riporse: one cylindrical tower swallowed by the walls, another higher up with a small window, made for watching the distance. The church of Santa Maria Assunta is the neoclassical rebuild that followed the earthquake of 1805. The population is 459.
