Carpinone

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 1,226 · Postal code: 86093

Under the church of Santa Maria Assunta there is a space as large as the church itself. The dead were lowered into it through openings in the nave floor closed with stone slabs, until Napoleonic law banned burials inside churches in 1806. In 1963, while the floor was being redone, people went back down: bones scattered about, and bones gathered in containers along the walls.

The village, 1,226 residents at 636 metres, takes its name from the river Carpino, and the river from the hornbeams: the sense would be place of cold water. Two and a half kilometres higher up, at 900 metres, the chapel of San Donato stands on an ancient road between Pietrabbondante and Isernia; its feast is 7 August.

Saint Joseph, patron of a town mentioned on Montecassino's bronze doors

📅 Every year, on 19 March

Carpinone celebrates Saint Joseph on 19 March; the town once hosted a Benedictine monastery founded in 1064 and donated to the abbey of Montecassino, still today mentioned among its possessions in the inscriptions of the abbey's famous bronze doors.
