Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua
📅 Every year, on 13 June
On 13 June Miranda, a municipality of 1,064 inhabitants in the province of Isernia, celebrates its patron Saint Anthony of Padua.
On 15 August 1955 a student from Miranda who was keen on archaeology, Raffaele Pizzi, found in a gully outside the village a first-century stele with four carved figures. Some people protested, out of superstition, and the stone stayed where it was: it was only lifted out in 1968, and today it stands in the square.
The village, 1,064 residents, grew in rings around a Norman castle of which little is left; the coat of arms keeps the two towers over the sea of the Di Somma, lords from 1445. Above the houses, facing the valley of Isernia, stands the chapel of Santa Lucia, beside it the cave where legend says the saint hid: on the last Sunday of August people go up for the day.
