Castelpizzuto

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 159 · Postal code: 86090

The village began around 1269 as a small Angevin stronghold watching over the Matese, but by the end of the thirteenth century it had been split three ways among three different lords. It was Alferio d'Isernia who put it back together, buying one third at a time: by 1316 he had the last piece and could sign himself lord of Pizzuti.

Of the baronial castle a semicircular corner tower and a loggia survive, swallowed by the buildings around them. Until 2009 it was on sale like any ordinary house; then the comune bought it, restored it and moved the town hall in. The population is 159, and the patron saint, San Domenico, is celebrated with the rite of the snake handlers.
