Sant'Agapito

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 1,387 · Postal code: 86070

The mother church of San Nicola has two façades: one on one street, one on the other, so that whichever way you come you find an entrance in front of you.

The town takes its name from the martyr Agapitus, to whom the church it grew around was dedicated: from Sanctum Agapitum it had already become Santa Capiata by 1516. From the twelfth century a family took the name of the fief and held it for more than three centuries; in 1444 Giovannantonio Gaetani sold it to Antonio d'Afflitto for 4,200 ducats. Further south stands the church of the Madonna dell'Olmeto, built where the Virgin was said to have appeared, in a little wood of elms. The 1,387 residents call themselves the gateway to the Matese.
