On 8 September Belforte Monferrato, a municipality of 505 inhabitants in the province of Alessandria, celebrates the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The name appears as Bellum Fortium in tenth-century documents, when people left the valley floor for the castle hill, recalling the fortifying of this Apennine valley. The first Christian settlement grew on the plain below, beside a monastery of monks from Bobbio, and the church of San Colombano ended up the cemetery.
The Republic of Genoa raised the square tower around 1100, guarding the Monferrato border and the Ovada road; the castle came later. The parish church of the Nativity of Mary and San Colombano, late fifteenth century, carries a gilded Madonna on its bell tower; in the arms a grape cluster crosses the bands of the Cattaneo della Volta, the last lords.
